Bert Bissell (1902-1998) was a mountain climber and peace campaigner.
Born in Dudley, he lived at Selborne Road and worked as a probation officer. In 1925 he founded the Young Men's Bible Class at Vicar Street in Dudley. The bible class remained the Vicar Street Methodist Church for 83 years, until relocating to nearby Dixons Green Methodist Church in 2008.
Bert climbed Ben Nevis on VJ Day in 1945 and constructed a 'Peace Cairn' at its summit. He repeated the expedition annually after that, a tradition which continued for 50 years.
Bert died in November 1998 aged 96. There is a monument to him at Coronation Gardens opposite the Council House in Dudley town centre.
